In November of 2008, the Rochelle Police Department and the Rochelle Township High School staff particitpated in an "Active Shooter" training scenario.
The training was designed to help police department members train in responding to an active shooter situation at the high school, and allowed the school staff to get an up close view as to what the response could look like.
The responding officers used simunition guns. Simunition® rounds are used in real guns equipped with special barrels, that only hold a simunition round. The simunition round is similar to an actual bullet however it fires a wax like colored projectile. Simunitions feature a reduced propellant charge and reduced noise level, and will not damage
the user’s hearing. Therefore, while approved eye protection is required, the user does not need hearing protection. The cartridge produces a realistic recoil, and is safer because it virtually eliminates unburnt propellant and ejected particles.
The use of Simunition® rounds gives those involved in the training a real life experience.
