On May 29, 2007 the Rochelle Police Department held an in service training session, where all sworn officers were certified to carry a model X-26 Taser.

TheTaser X26, manufactured by Taser International, is another less lethal option for the Rochelle Police Department. Reports show the use of injuries, to officers and suspects, has dropped. After initiating the use of the Taser the Miami and Seattle PDs, in 2003, went over 12-months without a lethal force shooting, for the first time in over a decade.

The Taser X26 sends out a short duration, high voltage electrical impulse that overpowers the normal electrical signals within the nerve fibers. The Taser output is similar to the signals used by the nerves. These waves create extra "noise" within the nervous system much like static on the "phone lines" of the human body.

A single pull of the Taser X26 trigger discharges current for a 5-second cycle. The Taser X26 carried by the Rochelle PD comes complete with laser sight, low intesity lights, and an optional video camera, built into the grip. The X26 can deliver it's charge through 2-inches of clothing, and be can deployed from 25-feet away.

Rochelle Police Officer's are now carrying the Taser X26 while on patrol.

Below are some pictures from the recent training.

Deputy Chief Higby prepares to take a hit from the Taser.

Deputy Chief Higby becomes incapacitated as he begins a 5-second cycle.

Deputy Chief Higby's muscles lock up, preventing him from "resisting arrest".

Deptuy Chief Higby has fully recovered from his 5-second cycle, almost instantly, with no adverse effects.
Here the probes are removed from his back, and required no medical treatment.

Here Sgt.Smith takes his turn, and is assisted to the floor.

Sgt.Bergeron also volunteers.

The Taser X26 can also be used in drive-stun mode, where it is held against the offender.
This can be done prior to, or after the probes have been deployed.

Here Officer Christopherson is told to place his arms beneath him, and try to resist obeying the command to place his arms at his sides. Upon refusing to comply Officer Gilliam, a certified instructor, gives Officer Christopherson a drive-stun. Officer Christopherson immediately obeyed the commands, and placed his arms to his sides.
