LWV: Mental Health

Sgt. Michael Shane Leighton, a detective in the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office, Patrick Phelan, President and CEO of Sinnissippi Centers, Inc., and Tracy Brooks Sauk Valley President of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will speak on efforts their organizations have made to address the needs of the one in five individuals and families who experience issues related to mental illness.

Sgt. Leighton is a certified Crises Intervention Team member which allows him a better understanding and approach to those suffering from mental illness.  Law enforcement often is involved when an individual has a mental health crises.  Training for those attempting to de-escalate a highly volatile situation is critical to a safe and effective outcome for all. 

Sinnissippi Centers and NAMI have developed programs and services for those struggling with substance abuse and mental illness.  Patrick Phelan and Tracy Brooks will discuss the opportunities, challenges, and progress of their efforts.

The League of Women Voters will host the presentation and the public is invited to attend.
