Mayor Encourages Citizens to Shop Local for Holiday Gifts

Challenge yourself; support local businesses through innovative holiday gift giving!

Thanksgiving falls on November 28 which leaves us just 27 days for holiday decorating, baking, card sending and shopping. Take heart, you can get it all done without ever leaving Rochelle.  As the holidays approach choose or ask for locally produced gifts. Think outside the box.  Everyone , almost everyone, gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from a local salon or barber?  A gym or hospital fitness club membership is an appropriate gift for all ages.  Who wouldn’t appreciate a professional car detailing? Small, locally-owned detail shops & car washes sell gift certificates.  Maybe someone on your list would like the driveway sealed, the lawn mowed or driveway plowed for the season?

All of our local restaurants offer gift certificates. How about oil changes from a local garage?  Here’s a gift mom will appreciate: the services of a local cleaning lady; weekly, monthly or for the annual deep-cleaning.  My computer could use a tune-up. I KNOW I can find someone struggling to launch a tech repair business.  Summer sunshine is around the corner. How about gift certificates to our golf course, swimming pool or skydiving center?

Looking for something more personal? Local craftspeople spin their own wool and knit it into scarves, jewelry, make pottery, soaps, beautifully carved wooden gifts.  Harvest a gem from our second hand stores; transform it into a gift someone will love.  Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your servers a generous holiday tip.

How about a subscription to the VCCT productions or the high school concerts? Performers need love too!  No need to drive yourself crazy or run in circles. You can complete your holiday gift giving without leaving town, then put your feet up and enjoy the season.

Make local gift-giving your new holiday tradition!!
