Railroad Advisory Board Created

Railroad Advisory Board Created

Since it’s inception in the mid 1980’s, the City of Rochelle Railroad (CIR) has been an important tool in attracting businesses to our community. Several industries have chosen to locate in Rochelle due to the dual rail shipping options available through the CIR. The growth in the southeastern industrial sector over the past several years has prompted multiple extensions to the CIR resulting in over 3500 rail cars served in 2009. An additional extension is also planned on the west side of our community to serve the Nippon Sharyo facility.

As discussed at the October 25, 2010 City Council Meeting, several factors including rail car volumes and safety need to be considered to ensure the CIR’s ability to continue meeting the needs of industries now and in the future. These discussions have prompted the need to establish a Railroad Advisory Board (RAB) to advise the City Council and City management on CIR matters. The RAB would consist of five members appointed by the Mayor to serve on staggered three-year terms. Elected officials and employees of the City would not be eligible to serve on the board. The board would function in an advisory capacity and would make recommendations to the City Manager on the operation, management, future capital improvements, expansion plans and funding of this growing enterprise.
